Hidden deep in the heart of Sabah, the 55,000-hectare Deramakot Forest Reserve is one of Borneo’s best-kept secrets. Managed by the Sabah Forestry Department, it is the first tropical rainforest in Southeast Asia to be certified for sustainable forest management.

Deramakot is internationally recognized for its incredible biodiversity. It is home to rare and endangered wildlife, including orangutans, Bornean pygmy elephants, and all five wild cat species of Borneo. Accommodation in Deramakot is basic but comfortable, typically consisting of air-conditioned chalets with attached bathrooms and hot showers. Meals are served in a communal dining area prepared by local cooks.

Is the tour suitable for children or elderly travellers?

Yes, it can be — as long as they are comfortable with long drives and night safaris. However, the tour involves bumpy roads and time in the forest, so it may not be suitable for very young children or guests with mobility challenges.

How many people will be in the tour group?

Shared tours are limited to a maximum of 8 guests per vehicle, ensuring a more personal and comfortable experience. Private tours are available upon request for smaller groups or families.

What kind of wildlife can I expect to see?

Wildlife sightings can vary, but you may encounter orangutans, leopard cats, slow loris, flying squirrels, civets, and various species of hornbills. The experience focuses on both day and night safaris with our professional naturalist guide.

Are wildlife sightings guaranteed?

No wildlife sighting can ever be guaranteed — as these are wild animals in their natural habitat. However, our experienced naturalist guides know the forest intimately and will do their best to maximize your chances.

How do I get to Deramakot?

The journey typically starts from Sandakan or Sepilok, where our driver and guide will pick you up. The drive to Deramakot takes approximately 4–5 hours, including a scenic gravel-road drive through the forest.

What should I pack for the tour?

We recommend:

  • Comfortable lightweight clothing (preferably long-sleeved)

  • Rain jacket or poncho

  • Insect repellent

  • Flashlight or headlamp for night safaris

  • Camera and binoculars

  • Personal medication

Is there mobile signal or Wi-Fi at Deramakot?

Mobile reception is very limited, and there is no Wi-Fi in the reserve. It’s a perfect opportunity to disconnect and enjoy the tranquility of the rainforest.

How do I confirm my booking?

A 30% non-refundable deposit is required to secure your booking. For short-notice tours (less than 60 days before travel), a 50% deposit will apply. The balance payment is due 30 days before the tour commencement.

What if the tour is cancelled by the operator?

In the unlikely event that the tour needs to be cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances (such as road closures or minimum guest requirements not met), we’ll offer a full refund or flexible rescheduling option.

What happens if it rains during the tour?

Rain is part of the rainforest experience! Safaris will continue unless weather conditions become unsafe. Guests are advised to bring waterproof clothing and to embrace the adventure.

Booking & Cancellation Policies

Booking & Tour Deposit

  • A non-refundable deposit is required to confirm all bookings.

    • 30% deposit for bookings made more than 60 days before tour commencement.

    • 50% deposit for bookings made within 60 days of tour commencement.

  • The remaining balance must be settled 30 days prior to the tour commencement date.

  • Bookings made less than 30 days before the tour date require full payment upon confirmation.

Tour Participation.

  • Private tours require a minimum of two (2) participants per booking. Solo Traveler are welcome, however the tour rates will double.

  • Shared (non-private) tours may accommodate solo travellers; however, a single supplement fee applies.

  • Shared tours are available exclusively in July, August, and September, and are subject to limited availability.

  • Private tours are available year-round, including during July, August, and September (upon request).

Cancellation by Client

More than 60 days prior to tour commencement

  • Eligible for a full refund, excluding the 30% or 50% deposit and any applicable administrative fees.

30 to 59 days prior to tour commencement

  • Eligible for an 80% refund of the total payment, excluding the deposit and administrative fees.

20 to 29 days prior to tour commencement

  • Eligible for a 50% refund of the total payment, excluding the deposit and administrative fees.

14 to 19 days prior to tour commencement

  • Eligible for a 25% refund of the total payment, excluding the deposit and administrative fees.

13 days or fewer prior to tour commencement

  • Not eligible for a refund.

  • The deposit (30% or 50%) is strictly non-refundable.

  • Administrative fees may apply to all cancellations to cover processing and handling costs.

  • As an alternative to cancellation, flexible postponement may be arranged, subject to availability and applicable terms.

  • No refund will be given for unused services or activities once the tour has commenced.
